Construction

Construction work is planned and executed under scrutiny from clients and main contractors through to regulators and insurers. In building and construction, process control, worker safety, and environmental performance all need to be evidenced and maintained.

ISO 9001 for construction companies provides the foundation for quality management. This standard sets requirements for how processes are controlled, nonconformities handled, and continual improvement maintained. Alongside ISO 9001, construction businesses frequently pursue standards covering occupational health and safety, environmental management, and carbon reporting.

ISOQAR works with construction organisations through ISO certification, training, and consultancy. We work with specialist subcontractors through to principal contractors. Explore relevant ISO building and construction standards below.

Quality management and process control

Building and construction projects involve multiple trades, subcontractors, and interdependent activities running concurrently. ISO 9001 in construction sets requirements for how work is planned and controlled at every stage. This includes everything from document management and supplier oversight to inspection, corrective action, and nonconformity handling.

ISOQAR certification audits review how these controls operate in practice, and our consultancy support helps businesses define scope and prepare for audit where processes span multiple sites or subcontractor relationships.

Occupational health and safety

Construction carries some of the highest occupational risk of any sector. ISO 45001 provides a structured approach to identifying and managing hazards, covering plant operations, working at height, contractor safety, and incident reporting.

ISOQAR certification audits assess how safety systems work day to day, and our sector-specific training helps managers, supervisors, and site teams apply requirements consistently across projects and locations.

Environmental management and carbon reporting

Environmental obligations for construction businesses cover waste disposal, pollution control, noise, and compliance with planning conditions. ISO 14001 provides a framework for managing these responsibilities in a structured, auditable way.

Where carbon performance is under scrutiny from clients, investors, or regulatory bodies, ISO 14064 and ISO 14068 help organisations quantify, manage, and verify greenhouse gas emissions.

ISOQAR provides certification, training, and preparation support across all 3 standards.

Construction ISO standards : FAQs

ISO 9001 is a quality management standard that sets requirements for how processes are planned, controlled, and reviewed. For construction companies, this covers document control, supplier management, inspection activity, and how nonconformities are identified and corrected.

ISO 3834 sets quality requirements for fusion welding of metallic materials. In construction, it applies where structural steelwork, bridges, or other welded assemblies are fabricated. Clients and specifiers often require it as evidence that welding processes and personnel meet defined quality standards before work begins.

The Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 set legal duties for managing health and safety across a project. ISO 45001 works alongside CDM rather than replacing it, providing a management system framework for how safety obligations are identified, controlled, and reviewed on an ongoing basis.

ISO 9001 focuses on how processes are managed, not on producing identical outputs. For construction, this means controlling how projects are planned, resources allocated, and variation handled. These are requirements that apply consistently even when no two projects are the same.

Certification scope is defined around the activities and locations the organisation controls. For construction businesses, this typically includes site operations, not just the head office. How sites are included depends on the nature of work and how management systems are applied across them.

ISO 9001 requires organisations to manage supplier and subcontractor risk as part of their quality system. Certification assesses how subcontractors are selected, monitored, and reviewed, and how directly employed staff perform.

ISO 45001 applies to all workers whose activities fall within the organisation’s control, including subcontractors and self-employed workers on site. Certification audits examine how safety responsibilities extend beyond directly employed staff.

Changes to the type, scale, or location of projects may affect certification scope and should be discussed with your certification body. ISOQAR works with construction businesses to review and update scope as operations change, through ongoing surveillance audits and consultancy support.
