Enter ISO/IEC 42001. The first global standard designed to help organisations develop, deploy, and maintain AI technology through a certifiable management system tailored specifically to ensure responsible AI, it emphasises the integration of ethical, technical, and risk management principles into AI practices. Great in theory, but what does ‘responsible AI’ actually mean?
Defining Responsible AI
In a recent Alcumus ISOQAR guide to ‘Empowering Responsible AI: Understanding ISO/IEC 42001’, we delved into the key principles of the standard to find out. In doing so, we shaped our definition as“…the approach to developing, deploying, and using AI solutions that are technically proficient, socially beneficial, and ethically sound, looking to enhance human capabilities and decision-making processes over replacing human judgement.”
Breaking this down further, each of the following principles combines to form the basis of responsible AI:
Fairness
Dependent on their data inputs and training models, AI systems have the potential to perpetuate biases and unintended discrimination. Fairness here means ensuring the right governance frameworks exist when building AI systems, mitigating bias and ensuring equality, inclusivity, and reliability of results.
Transparency
Every AI system should be understandable and explainable to all stakeholders and users engaged with it. From providing clear insights on how AI algorithms make decisions and what data they rely on – to their potential limitations – transparent AI should build trust, allowing organisations to show they are accountable for their systems’ outputs.
Accountability
Tied into transparency is the need for accountability. Setting clear responsibilities for the decisions AI systems make, organisations with processes in place to address negative consequences, errors, or unintended outcomes ensure not only that they’re held accountable for their actions of their systems – but they can take corrective measures as needed. Ethical use
Responsible AI is ethical AI; ensuring that an organisation’s systems align with human rights and societal values must always reign true. By defining and adhering to ethical principles, organisations can deliver AI services confidently and contribute positively to the community at large, without damaging public trust.
Sustainability
From energy consumption and use of resources (both human and technical) to the longer-term environmental and societal impact of AI, organisations should consider how their AI systems are designed and deployed. Aligned with ethical principles, sustainable AI should both benefit society while minimising its ecological footprint.
It’s in the strength of these principles that responsible AI prevails. Where risks can be managed and regulations complied with. By aligning with standards like ISO/IEC 42001, organisations can build resilient AI systems that not only drive innovation but contribute positively to society. In an AI-driven future, responsible AI is no longer a nice to have; it’s become business critical.
